Three reactor filings, three different decades
The NRC docket had a busy week, and the interesting part is that all three filings are the same story caught at completely different moments.
TVA’s Clinch River went to a mandatory hearing on its construction permit application. Mandatory hearings sound like nothing, and mostly they are: the Commission checking its own staff’s homework rather than refereeing a fight. But it’s the last real step before a permit, which makes this the week an advanced reactor site in the Southeast stopped being a paper exercise. Note where that is. The Southeast is already watching data centers and industrial load bid for the same firm megawatts.
Constellation went the other direction with the Christopher M. Crane Clean Energy Center, pulling NRC inspection reports that cover decommissioning and restart at the same time. Read that twice. One reactor, two opposite stacks of paperwork, running concurrently. That’s what a restart actually looks like from the regulator’s side, and it’s the only thing in this week’s set that puts electrons on a wire before 2030.
Then there’s Blue Energy Global, way back at the mouth of the funnel, walking the NRC through Part 1 design details at an August public meeting. Years from anything. Track it anyway, because today’s pre-application meeting is 2031’s construction permit.
One company describing a design. One utility finishing a permit. One operator restarting steel that’s already standing. Same queue, a decade of spread.
DOE just took an option off the table
The Energy Secretary cancelled three proposed National Interest Electric Transmission Corridor projects. NIETC is the federal crowbar for getting backbone transmission built where state siting has stalled, so this doesn’t stop any construction. Nothing was under a shovel. What it does is shrink the federal appetite for forcing wires through.
Which matters more than it sounds. If you’re siting a 500 MW campus you’ve got two ways to firm power: pull it across somebody else’s wires, or make it inside your own fence. Washington just got less interested in helping with the first one. Everything else this week is the second one.
And here’s the number that explains the whole thing
Reactors are slow. Everyone knows reactors are slow. So the fast path to firm power is a gas turbine, and that’s where the line is genuinely absurd.
GE Vernova’s turbine backlog hit 116 GW in the quarter ending July 23, up from 100 GW three months earlier. About a fifth of what’s under contract belongs to data-center customers. They’re taking reservations for 2031 delivery right now, expect to be at 125 GW of backlog and slot reservations by New Year’s, and lead times on new heavy-duty orders run around three years. As of the end of Q1 there were roughly 10 GW of slots left across 2029 and 2030 combined. Siemens and Mitsubishi are booking on the same horizon.
That’s not a supply chain problem. That’s a sold-out sign.
So look at the actual choice in front of a developer right now. A reactor that clears its permit in the early 2030s, or a turbine that ships in the early 2030s. That’s not a technology decision. That’s picking a line to stand in.
Which is why the small item this week is quietly the most satisfying one. A 150 MW battery project in Jackson County, Minnesota went active in the MISO queue with its interconnection agreement executed. Study cleared, agreement signed, position real. Somebody’s actually moving.
What to watch
Clinch River’s permit. Does it issue on the timeline the hearing implies? That’s the moment an advanced reactor site converts from study to capital commitment.
Crane’s restart schedule. It’s the only in-decade firm power in this week’s set, which makes its dates the most load-bearing numbers here.
A second round of NIETC cancellations. One is a decision. Two is a direction, and it pushes a lot more load-serving strategy behind the meter.
